MINISTRY HIGHLIGHTS:

Sager Brown Mission Trip

Did you you know that a group from Leesburg UMC traveled to UMCOR's Sager Brown Depot in Baldwin, LA for a week of mission work? UMCOR stands for United Methodist Committee on Relief, and Sager Brown is one of UMCOR’s relief-supply depots. Volunteers assemble, verify, and pack relief-supply kits so that they can be sent to the areas where they are needed most. They also help with outreach programs in the depots’ local communities. Thank you to Charlie & Cece Lyon, Bill & Darlene Mallow, and Jimmy & Linda Bence for giving of your time to be the hands and feet of Jesus on this mission trip.

Mission Cup Offering

Did you know that nearly $4,000 has been placed in red solo cups for mission outreach over the past year and half?

If you are sitting in a pew at LUMC on the third Sunday of the month the likelihood is high that you will be approached by a sweet, smiling child holding a red cup. On this “Mission Cup Offering” Sunday the children of LUMC leave their own worship service in The Exhange and come into the sanctuary. They walk around and give the adults an opportunity to support a designated mission project that Sunday.

Projects have ranged from local ministries like the Food Pantry to conference ministries like Wesley Foundations and Magnolia Manor. This past Sunday $202.80 was raised for the Methodist Home for Children and Youth.

Daddy-Daughter Dance

Did you know that for the past seven years girls and their daddies get all dressed up for a magical evening to participate in the annual Daddy-Daughter Dance, an outreach ministry of Leesburg UMC? The dance is typically held the Saturday night before Valentine’s Day for dads and their daughters to have fun and build lasting memories. Geared for girls of all ages, the Daddy-Daughter Dance has continued to see sell out crowds each year and now includes three separate dances.

The very faithful LUMC volunteer committee that organizes, plans, decorates and puts on the Daddy-Daughter Dance has become adept at making the event special. From turning the event location, which in 2015 was the Bindery at Oakland Library, into a wonderland fit for a magical night to making sure snacks are elegantly prepared and presented to assuring the age- and family-appropriateness of the music provided, the organizers leave no detail unexamined.

As an additional outreach, Leesburg UMC collects dresses and has several “shopping” opportunities at the church for those in need of a dress to wear.

Begun in 2009, the Lee County Daddy Daughter Dance was born out of LUMC’s desire to host an event that would bless the community and help promote healthy family relationships.

Altar Fund

Did you know that on the first Sunday of every month, during the sacred time of Holy Communion, money is left on the altar that is designated for the Altar Fund? This fund is used to help those in need in our community, whether it be a power bill, groceries, etc. The Altar Fund has raised nearly $3,500 since 2014.

Open Door VBS | Bibles to Thailand | ECHOES

School may already be in full swing, but we’re thinking back on all of the great ways LUMC was in ministry this summer!

Did you know that we had a group from our church that spent a day at Open Door Community House, Inc. in Columbus to lead a mini-Vacation Bible School for kids ages 5-12? They sang, taught Bible Stories and truths and just “hung out” serving this great ministry. Open Door runs a Community Summer camp every day for 120 kids from 8:00am-6:00pm, and LUMC was excited be a small part of that.

Did you know that we sent 125 Bibles to children in Thailand this summer? Not only did our kids have a great time at Vacation Bible School learning more about Jesus, but they also learned how to help others by raising over $500 to send these Bible, which were printed in Thai, to children who had never had access to the Word of God written in their native language.

Did you know that a group of students spent a week sharing their faith through drama and music during the 2015 ECHOES Tour? They traveled across three states – Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee – and performed in 3 nursing homes, a church as well as volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club. This was their first tour and a great success for the youth and ECHOES Amplified as they grew stronger in their faith by sharing it with others.

LUMC Food Pantry

Did you know that every Wednesday morning from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon a group of dedicated volunteers gathers at LUMC to distribute food to those in need in Lee County? These volunteers not only bag and distribute food but they meet people, listen to their needs, pray for them and with them and most importantly show them the love of Christ.

In addition to the weekly Food Pantry ministry, there are special Saturday Food Missions held six times a year that specifically help the elderly in Lee County.

Over the years, the ministry has grown tremendously. In 2014 about 2,100 Lee Countians received food through the LUMC Food Pantry. The numbers and the impact have continued to increase in 2015.
